In today’s diverse workplaces, a vital question remains: Are we truly supporting the mental health of our Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) employees? My six years of experience supporting multicultural teams reveals that many carry an “invisible load”—a unique combination of psychological challenges that often go unseen by leadership.
Moving beyond generic wellness programs requires recognizing these specific burdens and committing to culturally safe solutions.
The Unique Pressures CALD Employees Face
The mental health of migrant and CALD employees is affected by factors far beyond the typical workplace stress. The invisible load includes:
- Acculturation and Identity Stress: The continuous effort to navigate new cultures while preserving one’s identity can lead to significant anxiety and internal conflict.
- Generational Conflict: Employees may face burnout or stress balancing the expectations of their traditional home culture with the demands of a modern workplace, often resulting in family dynamics challenges.
- Migration-Related Stress and Trauma: The experiences tied to migration, settlement, or critical incidents can contribute to trauma, depression, and generalized anxiety.
- Cultural Stigma: Strong cultural taboos around discussing mental health act as a primary barrier, preventing employees from using internal support systems and leading to isolation.
Creating a Psychologically Safe Solution
My passion is driven by my own journey navigating life as a CALD community member. This informs my approach to transforming organizations into psychologically supportive environments.
Creating a truly safe workplace means:
- Leading with Lived Experience: My work combines professional counselling expertise with personal understanding, offering an authentic approach that builds immediate trust and connection.
- Building Culturally Inclusive Spaces: I create safe, inclusive environments where people feel comfortable sharing their stories and addressing stigma head-on.
- Targeted Training: We move past generic advice. I design tailored workshops and training (including MHFA) that specifically address cultural stigma, language barriers, and migration-related stress for multicultural teams.
- Policy Consultation: I support leaders in building resilient organizations by consulting on psychological health policy, wellbeing culture design, and staff resilience strategies.
